Landscape Design

Santa Fe Tree Farm specializes in native species which are more adaptable and hardy to this micro-climate and zone 5 in which we live.  Our experienced team of professionals provide the knowledge and expertise to install new landscapes, transform existing landscapes, and design landscapes for your home or business.

Our inventory is stocked with many species that are simply unavailable at nurseries and big box stores in town. We are also one of the only companies with the equipment to handle large caliper trees and boulders. We have several tree spades mounted on trucks ranging from 32", 55", and 90" in diameter. This translates into a ball and burlap root ball that is ready for transplanting any time of year.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND CONSULTATION:

We have on staff, a Landscape Architect, Debe Holland, who holds an Associate of Arts Degree in Landscape Design. In conjunction with Donn Carpenter, native tree expert and owner, we can consult with you at your home or business and design a sustainable landscape complete with drawings in the following areas:

  •  Inventory:The largest stock of mature trees: Up to 30 feet
  •  Xeriscape: native, drought tolerant varieties in a natural landscape
  •  Hardscape: boulders, stone, flag-stone, concrete paths and patios
  •  Stonework: Walls, pathways, retaining walls
  •  Boulders: Bird baths, borders, fountains
  •  Irrigation: Installation and maintenance
  •  Fertilization: Deep root feeding programs to amend soils pH

We understand that our micro-climate has its challenges with creating a natural and mature landscape, that's why we stock large caliper trees. When you plant 3" and up caliper trees, your landscape is immediately transformed into mature looking, naturalized landscape that appears to be years old.

In Santa Fe NM, it's particularly challenging when you take into consideration the following facts:

  • Cold- USDA Zone 5: -20 F to 10 F degrees
  • High mountain desert terrain: 7,000 ft
  • Only average rainfall of 7 -11" / year
  • High alkaline soils
  • No sub-soil moisture
  • No sub-soil organic matter
  • No nitrogen in soil
  • Soil structure is clay, decomposed rock, and caliche

Our trees are planted by professionals, dug by spades, ball and burlap, watered, your soil amended (with special organic formula) and transplanted with the utmost care to provide you with the most envious, mature looking landscape around.

Benefits of Trees:

  • Trees generate significant benefits for the urban environment
  •  Trees clean pollutants from the air, including sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone and carbon monoxide. Just 10 trees, for example, remove 5 tons of carbon dioxide from the air a year, and about 1,000 pounds of pollutants
  •  Trees greatly lower energy consumption
  •  Shade from trees prevents heat islands, which is the build up of heat from sunlight pouring onto dark, non-reflective surfaces such as roofs, roads, and parking lots
  •  Three strategically placed trees around a house can cut air-conditioning usage and costs in half
  •  Trees reduce the need for storm water management facilities. One hundred mature trees capture about 250,000 gallons of rainwater per year by absorbing rain and slowing the flow of storm water, allowing some water to evaporate and the rest to soak into the ground thus replenishing groundwater and wells
  •  Studies indicate that trees have proven to significantly improve human mental and physical health.
  •  American Forests recommends a minimum of 40% tree cover in urban areas.
  •  American Forests shows that the 448 largest urban areas in the U.S. lost more than 3.5 billion trees in just the past 10 years
  •  A NASA sponsored study found that the continued destruction of trees raised temperatures in the city by 5 to 8 degrees higher than in outlaying areas – which has generataed increasingly violent storms and flooding

Do a good deed, plant some trees!
